CHUAH PING JING
ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO
“A family is planning forward to build a comfortable house to suit their sustainable living lifestyle. This project is about designing a human centred sustainable design home for this family.
Basically, this project is to design a sustainable home but to make the project more interesting and real, this family consists of the parents and 2 children (various age) are living together with their pets.
As the architect must pay special attention to their living lifestyle and different needs. Different age categories will need different things. Take consideration of the parents, children, pets and sometimes might have guests come over to visit like their grandparents or friends.
This sustainable home should become their sanctuary and help them rejuvenate from their busy working life by creating a balance habitat for human and animals. Needless to say, the sustainable home is to accommodate not only for the family but including their pets which are also considered as family members.”

(Project 2C)

Task
1.
Find a family of choice as client. If they already have some kind of pets living with them (cats/ dogs/ birds/ sugar gliders/ fish etc) that’s good. If not, imagine the family with pets. Interview them and get to know them well as if they are your real first client when you first starting out your architectural practice.
2.
“Sustainable home design with pets in mind”
3.
Research on sustainable design approaches and strategies, then decide which are suitable and appropriate for the family and make provision for this in the house design.
4.
The proposed sustainable home will have the usual mix of functional spaces such as a living space, sleeping spaces, dining space, cooking and washing areas, pet area, and etc.
5.
The house should be double- storey with a total built-up area between 100 to 200 sqm.
6.
Project also need to comply with local authorities’ guidelines, UBBL and Bomba requirements.
7.
Therefore, careful consideration of all relevant issues and contexts are to guide in design proposal, from the initial conceptualisation of the house design and living sustainable experience, up to the construction details and material selection of the architecture and its interior.
8.
The sustainable house will be located in the housing development in Tanjung Bungah, Penang.
9.
This house will enhance the living lifestyle of the family and their pets. Furthermore, an awareness of the current living lifestyle related to the post-pandemic period we are currently experiencing is also expected of you as the designer.
10.
Previous project 2A- Precedent Study and 2B - Site Analysis has allowed a deeper understanding of the site forces and issues in Tanjung Bungah, as well as design strategies of a house design with vernacular architecture approaches.
